Drink Water, Lose Weight

I could write a book about the benefits of water, but today I want to give you a quick tip. If you want to shed a few extra pounds, always have a water bottle on hand. A recent study published in the Obesity Journal, found that drinking a glass of water prior to each meal can help you to lose weight. They call it water preloading.

84 adults with obesity were randomly divided into two groups. Group A was told to drink 16 ounces of water 30 minutes prior to breakfast, lunch and dinner. Group B was told to imagine they were full before eating. Not so surprising, the group who drank water before eating lost, about three pounds more than the other group. Even more impressive is the group who drank water lost about 10-12 pounds in a week. While this is not likely going to happen to the average person, I am sure that drinking water prior to meals can definitely be beneficial. Even if you lose only a few pounds over the course of the year, the benefits of staying hydrated are even more important.

Here is a guideline I have used in the past to stay hydrated all day long, and maximize the effectiveness on the body.

2 Glasses After waking up (helps to activate internal organs)
1 Glass Before each meal (helps digestion)
1 Glass Before taking a bath (helps to lower blood pressure) 
1 Glass Before going to bed (avoid stroke and heart attack)
